A Series on Confidence: Charity Begins At Home

My personal famous line is “Confidence does not come from being perfect and having it all. It comes from accepting yourself just the way you are and being unapologetic about it." Confident people don't go around begging people to accept and love them. People are compelled to recognize and acknowledge them because they see a light that shines through them. It is that light that draws people to them. Your foundation of confidence can come from many sources and situations. Your primary foundation of confidence is your family. If you are a parent, you can raise confident children. The way you do this is by accepting and loving your children the way that they are (in terms of physical, individual and intellectual abilities) and by not comparing them to other people’s children. Believe in your children and show them through actions not just words. When you do that, even if the world says otherwise about and to your children, it will not steal their confidence because they have a solid foundation on a parent who has instilled self-love, acceptance, faith, and belief in them.

When I was growing up at home in Kaduna, Nigeria, the only person who believed in my dreams and supported me even in my lowest hours was my mom. She never told me that I was not good enough or that I couldn’t become great. To this day,I can hear her favorite expression to me in my head “You can achieve anything you put your mind to.” Every time I face a difficult challenge, her words always pop up in my head. Her belief and faith in my abilities inspire me everyday to become the best that I can be and to not give up.

I want to encourage you; whoever you are, to start right where you are. If you feel like you have not done the best you could to build your child’s confidence, it is not too late to start. You can do it. Remember that words are very powerful, especially the words of a parent to a child. Learn to speak powerful and empowering words into your children. Millions of successful people in the world had parents who believed in them. Bless your child’s future today by instilling the confidence in them that will help them conquer every challenge, because you are the foundation of your child’s confidence!
